Introducing PretendWorks
Xyzzya is now officially part of PretendWorks, our newly formed parent organization dedicated to building technologies that bring pretend, play, and possibility to the forefront of computing. You can find our new home at PretendWorks.com (coming soon!).
And yes — I can’t believe we got the name PretendWorks.com. What does that say!? To me, it feels like a sign that this project has a unique place in the world, and that there’s a lot of room — and need — for what we’re creating.
A Quick Refresher: What is Xyzzya?
For those catching up: Xyzzya is a next-generation multiplayer environment built around text, immersion, and deep player agency — reimagining classic MUDs with modern AI-native computing. Unlike traditional games, Xyzzya isn’t just a world you visit; it’s a living system where language is the interface, and where you can shape the world as easily as you describe it.
Why Now?
Recent advances in AI and natural language understanding have made it possible to finally realize the dream of worlds that respond to words with nuance, depth, and creativity. More than ever, we believe players deserve tools that unlock the full potential of their imagination — and Xyzzya is our answer.
Major Update: Massive Player Capacity
We recently reanalyzed our numbers and discovered something exciting: with our current infrastructure approach, we can support tens of thousands of active subscribers without needing special vendor deals or enterprise-scale contracts. This means we’ll be able to welcome far more players than we originally planned — and we can do it sustainably, right out of the gate. This is huge!
Updated 3–6 Month Roadmap
We’re now aiming for an early access release within this quarter, with these key milestones ahead:
✅ Prototype World Engine – Finalize the core server and text-based rendering system that powers real-time, shared pretend.
🔁 Improved Multiplayer Elements – Complete the architecture for players and spectators.
🔜 Early Access World – Open an invite-only test environment so our earliest supporters can explore, build, and help shape Xyzzya.
Our Goals
Our target is clear: launch early access before the end of the current quarter, and reach 1,000+ subscribers by year’s end. It’s an ambitious goal, but with the team’s renewed commitment and the incredible opportunities we’ve uncovered, we believe it’s within reach.
